Find Out About Career Assessments

Career assessments, also known as career tests, are often a helpful tool as you explore majors and careers. The results you obtain from career assessments can provide you with more information about yourself, offer new career ideas, or help confirm options you may have been considering.

Two career assessment options

  • DISCOVER Career Planning Program - $15
This career-planning program assesses your Interests, Abilities, and Values in a broad manner. You can use the information database to research major, career, and graduate school options. This program would be available to you throughout your time as an enrolled UT-Austin student.
  • Demo and More info

  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Strong Interest Inventory (SII) package - $40
This career package measures your Personality and Interests in more depth. Your comprehensive reports will cover a range of topics such as popular careers, possible majors, internship ideas, work tasks, work environments, and personal strengths and challenges.
  • MBTI Report (PDF)
    SII Report (PDF)

How to take assessments

Step 1: Come to the SLCC
  • Meet with a career counselor to discuss how a career assessment might assist you in your decision-making process.
  • Counseling appointments are generally 45-minutes, and available Mon-Fri 9am-5pm. Call (512) 471-1217 or come by Jester A115 to make an appointment.

Step 2: Take assessments online

  • You will then be authorized to take the assessments as discussed in your initial meeting.
  • Instructions for payment and login procedures will also be given at this time.

Step 3: Get results

  • With DISCOVER, your assessment results will be available immediately upon completion of each inventory.
  • With the MBTI-SII package, you will attend a 75-minute interpretation presentation to receive your results. A career counselor will thoroughly explain the assessment reports and answer questions you may have.

Step 4: Clarify your results

  • It is common for students to have more questions after taking a career assessment. Why? Because assessments only offer a piece of the puzzle, and meeting with a counselor can help you understand where this piece fits in the larger picture of your major and career exploration.
  • Schedule a career counseling appointment to discuss your assessment results by calling (512) 471-1217 or stopping by Jester A115.
